Ssekiddu George’s Story

Meet Ssekiddu (Se-chi-du). Born in the Mukono district of Central Uganda, when he was only 10, both his parents died, leaving him and 7 siblings alone. With no relatives to support them, they were evicted from their home and left to fend for themselves on the streets.

Thankfully, Ssekiddu was eventually saved by World Vision International, who set up in Kampala to provide support for street children—most of whom were orphans or had been abandoned due to complex medical needs.

Over the following years, it was with World Vision’s help that Ssekiddu acquired education to almost a secondary school level. Unfortunately though, the organisation were soon forced to relocate, leaving Ssekiddu to fend for himself again.

Armed with enough education in the English language to be able to establish work within local trade, he spent the next few years doing whatever he could to support his siblings, as well as the many other children orphaned and abandoned on the streets—all whilst barely meeting his own needs.

Area 1: Accommodation

With your donations, we’re able to help provide safe, stable housing that gives children warmth, shelter, and a secure place to rest and feel cared for.

The next chapter

After working tirelessly, Ssekiddu eventually saved enough to become the sole carer of 10 children in his district, doing the best he could to ensure they were fed, clothes, and educated.

One day, Ssekiddu was reunited with Bugingo Desire, an old friend whom he had not seen since they were both children. Bugingo had also been saved from the streets as a child, and had since set up an NGO in Kampala—the Desire Child Care Organization, providing similar services as World Vision did.

Inspired by this, Ssekiddu and his sister, Ndagire, decided to do whatever they could to “make a difference in the lives of Uganda’s abandoned and compromised children.” However, within weeks of securing their first empty brick shack, those 10 rescued children quickly became 25.

Now, since 2022, over 40 children live there permanently, with many more passing through, whenever Ssekiddu is able to help others. Unfortunately though, many of the children the organisation helps have chronic illnesses, including sickle cell disease (SCD) and other serious conditions.

Area 2: Education

With your donations, we’re able to support access to schooling, helping children continue learning and build brighter futures through education.

Current challenges

Whilst Ndagire stays with the children, Ssekiddu works as a street vendor in Kampala, with his friend Kyeyune. Together, they run a small second-hand clothes shop, travelling to the city and back with supplies for the children.

Describing their current situation, Ssekiddu writes:

“Where we rent in the countryside, we feed and care for more than 40 children daily. However, despite doing all we can for them, there are many more children we’re unable to help.

Those we’ve taken in come from different locations. Some are orphans, whilst others are from very poor families, or single parents, who can’t afford to care for them anymore, so the children move between villages, looking for food to survive.

Every day they have to walk to 3-5 miles each way, just to get to school and back. However, it is our dream to purchase our own land so we can build homes, a residential school, provide them with clean water, raise cattle, and grow our own food, so we can support ourselves and help other children.”

Area 3: Medication

With your donations, we’re able to fund essential medical care and ongoing health support, helping children stay healthy, safe, and supported.

Future goals

Located in the Mukono district of Nakifuma County, Geornia Kids Foundation is based in Bugabo Village. It is a registered non-profit local NGO, run in conjunction with its co-director,  Chantelle Knight of NeurodiverseLIFE.

Our hope is to use our platform, audience and reach to raise funds to help realise Ssekiddu’s dream to:

  • Purchase 4 acres of land.
  • Build permanent homes and a school.
  • Provide ongoing education for the children.
  • Provide ongoing food, medicine and basic needs.
  • Provide clothes and bedding (inc. bunk beds).
  • Provide books, stationary and educational resources.
  • Provide toys, sports equipment and outdoor games.

Any support you can offer will make a huge difference to the lives of the many children under Ssekiddu’s care. Thank you.
